How to rotate an image online

  1. Drop your photo into the box above, click to browse, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
  2. Tap Rotate 90° CW or CCW for quarter turns, 180° to flip it upside down, or drag the slider for any angle in between — the preview updates instantly.
  3. Press Download Image to save the rotated picture at full resolution — no watermark, no signup.

Rotate 90°, 180° or any angle you need

Quarter turns cover most jobs: a sideways phone photo stands upright with one tap on Rotate 90° CW. But sometimes a picture is only slightly crooked — a scanned photo tilted three degrees, a horizon that lists to the left. For those, drag the custom angle slider and watch the preview straighten in real time. Unlike tools that rotate inside a fixed frame and chop off the corners, this rotator grows the canvas to fit the entire tilted image, so every pixel survives the turn.

Straight-out-of-camera photos rotate themselves

Modern phones and cameras record the intended orientation inside the file, and this rotator reads that flag when your photo loads — a portrait shot stored sideways already appears upright, exactly as your camera roll shows it. Whatever angle you then apply is on top of that corrected view, and the downloaded file strips the orientation metadata along with GPS data, so what you see is what every app will show.

Rotating vs flipping

Rotating turns the picture around a point; flipping mirrors it across an axis. A rotated landscape photo is still the same picture, just standing on its side or straightened — a flipped one is a mirror image where left and right swap. If text in the picture reads backwards, that is a flip job: head to our free image flip tool, which also mirrors vertically and handles quarter-turn rotation. To repaint colors rather than move pixels, the PNG color changer is one click away.

Negato's geometry tools handle orientation, scale and framing — with color tools one click away. Invert image colors to create a photo negative, convert photos to black and white, compress heavy files, or resize to exact pixels — all free, watermark-free, and processed entirely in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Does rotating an image reduce its quality?

Rotating by 90°, 180° or 270° is a pixel-perfect remap — every pixel moves to a new coordinate and no detail is lost. Custom angles resample the picture once with smooth interpolation, which is visually lossless at normal viewing sizes.

What happens to the corners when I rotate by a custom angle?

The canvas grows to fit the whole tilted picture, so nothing is ever cropped. The areas outside the original rectangle stay transparent because the download is a PNG — no black or white wedges.

Is rotating the same as flipping?

No. Rotating turns the picture, while flipping mirrors it across an axis. If your photo faces the wrong way left-to-right, you want the flip tool instead — Negato has a dedicated free image flipper for that.

Can I rotate a HEIC photo from my iPhone?

Not directly — this tool reads JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP. Export the photo as JPG from the Photos app (most browsers do this automatically when you paste) and it rotates like any other file.

Does rotating keep my photo's EXIF data?

The rotation itself is pure pixel math and the download is freshly encoded, so EXIF orientation, GPS and camera metadata are stripped — which also stops viewers from re-applying an old orientation flag on top of your correction.

Can I rotate several images at once?

This page rotates one picture at a time so the live angle slider stays instant. For a batch, open the tool in a few tabs — nothing is uploaded, so each one runs at full local speed.

How do I straighten a photo that is slightly tilted?

Drag the angle slider in small steps — 1 to 3 degrees usually levels a horizon. The canvas grows to fit the straightened picture, and the empty corners stay transparent in the PNG download.

Is this rotator free like the big-name online tools?

Yes — and rotation here runs entirely in your browser: no uploads, no accounts, no watermarks, and full-resolution PNG downloads even while offline.
