How to invert image colors online

- Compare before and after with the slider, then press Download Image to save the result at full resolution — no watermark, no signup.
When should you invert an image?
The classic job is film. When you scan an old photographic negative, it looks dark and orange — run it through a color inverter and the photo jumps back to positive, ready to fix up.
Designers invert image colors on purpose too: a full color negative makes posters, glitch art and thumbnails pop, and it takes one click here instead of a Photoshop detour. Working on a brand asset? A black logo disappears on dark-mode backgrounds — our dedicated Invert Logo Colors tool turns a black logo white (or a white logo black) in one click, with transparency kept.
It is also easier on your eyes at night. Invert a bright screenshot and you get a dark version that does not glare at you in a dim room — and for documents there is a dedicated tool to invert PDF colors page by page.
Three invert modes, one click apart
- Invert All — the classic photo negative. Every color flips to its opposite.
- Invert RGB — selectively flip only the red, green or blue channel. Perfect for scanned negatives with a color cast.
- Invert Grayscale — a black-and-white negative, great for a stylized retro look.
The inverter accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP files. Animated GIFs are flattened to their first frame, and SVG isn't accepted — export your SVG to PNG first, which is also the route the Invert Logo Colors tool recommends.
However you invert image colors, resolution is kept up to ~16 megapixels — larger images are scaled down once for browser compatibility — and transparency in PNG files is preserved — see the dedicated invert PNG colors tool for the details.
Invert an image on iPhone or Android
You do not need an app. Open negato.app in Safari or Chrome on your phone, tap the upload box and pick a photo from your library. The inverted preview appears right away — tap Download Image and it lands in your camera roll. The same page works on iPad and desktop.
Want to flip or mirror instead?
If what you actually need is to mirror an image — that is, flip it horizontally so the left and right sides swap, like looking in a mirror — that is a flip rather than a color change. Use our free flip image tool for horizontal and vertical flips plus 90° and 180° rotation. To repaint specific colors instead of flipping all of them, try Edit PNG Colors.
Frequently asked questions
How do I invert the colors of an image?
Drag your picture into the tool at the top of this page and press Invert All — every pixel flips to its opposite color instantly. Compare before and after with the slider, then click Download Image to save the result at full resolution.
How do I invert the colors of an image in Canva?
Click the image in your Canva design, open Edit Image and go to Adjust, then scroll to the Color section and switch on Invert. If you only need the inverted file, inverting it here first and uploading the result to Canva is usually faster.
How do I invert the colors of an image in Mac Preview?
Preview has no one-click invert. Open the image, choose Tools and then Adjust Color, and swap the black and white points under the histogram — black to the right end, white to the left. That workaround stopped working in macOS 15, so a browser inverter is the dependable option.
How do I invert image colors in Microsoft Word?
Select the picture, open the Picture Format tab and click Color. Recent Office versions show Invert options at the bottom of the recolor gallery; if yours does not, invert the image here, download it and insert it back into your document.
Is this image inverter really free?
Yes — Negato is 100% free with no watermark, no signup and no daily limit. Invert as many images as you like.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The whole tool runs in your browser using HTML5 Canvas. Your image never leaves your device — once the page is loaded you can even go offline and keep inverting.
What does inverting the colors of an image actually do?
Inversion replaces every pixel with its opposite: each red, green and blue channel value is subtracted from 255. White turns black, red turns cyan, and a photo becomes its own color negative. Dimensions stay untouched up to ~16 megapixels — larger images are scaled down once for browser compatibility — and transparency is preserved.
What is inverting colors used for?
The classics: turning scanned film negatives back into viewable photos, making dark-mode versions of bright screenshots and documents, and creative negative effects for posters and thumbnails. The sections above cover each use in more detail.
How do I un-invert an image and get the original back?
Inverting is its own undo — apply the same flip a second time and every pixel returns to its original value. Drop your inverted file back in and press Invert All again. Keep the result as a lossless PNG if you plan to flip back; repeated JPG saves add compression artifacts.
Does inverting image colors use AI?
No. Color inversion is deterministic math — each channel is subtracted from 255, so the same image always produces the same result. No AI model is involved, which is why it works instantly and even offline.
Can I invert multiple images at once?
Yes — drop up to 10 files into the tool (or select them in the file picker) and each one lands in a batch queue. Switch between queued images to check the result, then press Download All to save every inverted image at full resolution.
How does Negato compare to other inverters like Lunapic?
Veteran editors like Lunapic have offered one-click inversion for years and remain fine choices. Negato's angle: everything runs in your browser so files are never uploaded, there's no signup or watermark, exports keep full resolution with metadata stripped, and you can batch up to 10 images per run.
Can I invert the colors of a video?
Not yet — Negato works with images only. To invert a specific video frame, export that frame as a JPG or PNG (most players have a save-frame option, or take a screenshot) and drop it here. Animated GIFs are accepted but flattened to their first frame; inverting every frame of an animation needs a video editor.
