How to flip an image online

  1. Drop your photo into the box above, click to browse, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
  2. Pick Flip Horizontal to mirror left-right, Flip Vertical to turn it upside down, or rotate 90° / 180°. The preview updates instantly.
  3. Check the before/after slider, then press Download Image to save at full size — no watermark, no signup.

Horizontal flip vs vertical flip

A horizontal flip mirrors the picture across the vertical axis: what was on the left is now on the right, exactly like a reflection. People search for this as a mirror image — and if you have ever wanted to mirror the text in an image on purpose for an artsy poster, this is the tool. A vertical flip mirrors across the horizontal axis, so the picture ends up upside down while keeping its left-right order — handy for reflections in water and symmetric layouts.

Flip vs rotate

Flipping mirrors, rotating turns. If your photo is sideways, use Rotate 90°. If it is upside down already, Rotate 180° puts it upright without mirroring anything. Both keep the full resolution, and rotated canvases resize automatically so nothing gets cropped.

Flip an image horizontally (mirror it)

Load your file and press Flip Horizontal — that single button is the mirror people search for. Left becomes right, text reads backwards, and the subject now faces the opposite way. Press it again to flip back; the tool always recomputes from your original, so toggling never degrades the picture. Download when the preview looks right.

Flip an image vertically (upside down)

Press Flip Vertical to mirror across the horizontal axis — the top of the picture swaps with the bottom, which is what "upside down" means as a flip (distinct from Rotate 180°, which also spins the left-right order). Water reflections, symmetry checks and print-transfer work all live here. Like the horizontal flip, pressing it again restores the original exactly.

What people call the same flip

Searches use half a dozen names for these two buttons — here is the cheat sheet so you land on the right one:

What you searchedThe button to press

Reverse image / back to frontFlip Horizontal (usually)
Upside down / invert verticallyFlip Vertical
Flip picture over / top to bottomFlip Vertical
Turn 90° or 180° (no mirroring)Rotate 90° / Rotate 180°

When flipping a photo is the right move

The everyday case is the selfie: front cameras save a mirror image of what you previewed, and flipping it back horizontal makes text, logos and hair parting sit the way you expect. Designers flip stock photos so the subject faces into the page instead of off the edge, and crafters flip artwork before printing iron-on transfers so the finished piece reads correctly. Flipping is also a classic portrait trick — mirror a face and you will instantly notice the small asymmetries everyone has. If you need to turn a photo on its side rather than mirror it, the dedicated image rotation tool handles 90°, 180° and any custom angle in between.

Frequently asked questions

Is flipping the same as rotating?

No. Flipping mirrors the picture across an axis, while rotating turns it. Flip horizontally to swap left and right; rotate 90° to stand a landscape photo on its side.

What is a mirrored image?

A horizontal flip. Left and right swap sides exactly like a reflection in a mirror, which is why people also call this tool a mirror image maker.

Does flipping reduce image quality?

No. Flipping is a pixel-perfect remap — the resolution stays exactly the same and no detail is lost. Your file downloads without any watermark.

How do I rotate a photo by an exact angle?

This page covers mirrors plus 90° and 180° turns. When quarter turns are not enough — straightening a crooked scan by a few degrees, for example — use the dedicated image rotation tool, which has a slider for any angle from −180° to 180°.

Can I flip a PNG with a transparent background?

Yes. Flipping only remaps pixel positions and never touches colors or the alpha channel, so transparent areas stay exactly as transparent as before. PNG uploads download as PNG with the see-through background intact.

How do I mirror an image?

Press Flip Horizontal — mirroring and a horizontal flip are the same operation. Left and right swap like a reflection, which is exactly the effect for selfies, transfer printing and facing-direction fixes. See the horizontal flip section above for details.

How do I flip an image upside down?

Press Flip Vertical — the top and bottom of the picture swap while left and right stay put. If your photo is actually rotated rather than mirrored (sideways or fully spun), use Rotate 180° instead, which turns the picture without mirroring it.

Can I flip multiple images at once?

Not in a single pass — this tool works on one image at a time, so there is no batch queue. For a handful of files it is still fast: drop, flip and download each in turn. Because every flip is recomputed from the original file, nothing degrades no matter how many images you process in a session.
