How to edit PNG colors: the four modes

Step by step: your first recolor

  1. Drop the PNG file into the editor above — drag and drop, browse, or paste with Ctrl+V.
  2. Click the exact color you want to edit; the eyedropper reads it straight from the image.
  3. Choose the edit: replace it with a new color, remove it to transparent, or pour a new one with the bucket.
  4. Download the edited file as a PNG — full resolution, transparency untouched.

Change a black background to white (or black text to white)

The Replace tab handles the classic dark-to-light swaps without any AI: set the color to replace to black (click it on the image for the exact shade), set the target to white, and every black pixel flips while the rest of the file waits untouched. The same trick turns black text or line art white for dark-mode designs. Two honest limits: bitmap text can only have its color replaced — the letters themselves cannot be reworded — and swapping a busy photo's background for a different scene is beyond per-color tools; that is a cutout job, and Remove Color plus the bucket gets you part of the way.

How to remove a background color from a PNG

Drop your file in, switch to the Remove Color tab and click the color you want gone — white is preselected since leftover white halos are the most common problem. Raise the tolerance until the remnant disappears: low values only catch exact matches, higher values also take the anti-aliased fringe around your subject. Download and you get a clean transparent PNG.

Tips for clean recoloring

When you recolor PNG artwork, pick the source color straight from the image by clicking it — the eyedropper reads the original pixel, not the preview. Logos and sprites usually need a tolerance around 15–35 so gradients and compressed edges are included without spilling into other shapes. Because every edit is recomputed from your original file, you can slide, pick and switch tabs freely without quality loss.

Where a PNG color editor earns its keep

Recoloring is the fastest brand shortcut there is: drop in last year's logo, swap the retired shade for the new brand color, and the refresh is done before a designer could even open a brief. The same trick updates icon sets for a UI retheme, matches chart series colors to a report template, and turns one mascot into a whole set of variants for stickers or game sprites. It fixes photographs too — a color cast from indoor lighting can be nudged toward neutral in seconds. If all you need is a quick one-click shade swap without the four editing modes, the dedicated PNG color changer runs the same engine in an even simpler layout.

Frequently asked questions

Will my PNG stay transparent?

Yes. Every tool on this page preserves the alpha channel, and the result always downloads as a PNG so transparency survives.

How do I remove a white background from a PNG?

Open the Remove Color tab — white is preselected as the color to remove. Drag the tolerance up until the background disappears, then download. The cutout stays crisp because edges fade out gradually.

What does the tolerance slider do?

It controls how similar a pixel must be to your picked color to be affected. Zero tolerance changes only exact matches; higher values catch anti-aliased edges and subtle shades of the same color.

Can I change the color of a PNG online for free?

Yes — this editor is free and unlimited, with no watermark or signup. For the simplest one-click shade swap, the dedicated PNG color changer uses the same engine with a focused layout; this page adds the Remove, Fill and Invert modes on top.

Which file formats can I edit here?

You can upload JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP files up to 30 MB. Whatever you upload, the result always downloads as a PNG so transparency in your artwork survives every edit.

How do I edit the color of a PNG file?

Three steps: drop the file in, click the color you want changed (the eyedropper grabs its exact value), then pick the edit — replace, remove or fill. Tweak the tolerance until the preview looks right and press Download PNG. The whole edit runs locally in your browser.

Can I edit the colors of a JPG file?

Yes — all four tools work on JPG uploads. Just know that JPG has no transparency channel: the format cannot store see-through pixels. Any edit still downloads as a PNG, so if you remove a background from a JPG you gain real transparency in the exported file.

How do I change a black background to white?

Use Replace Color: click the black area (or set the picker to black), set the target to white, and adjust tolerance until the whole background flips. For logos or text on black this works in one pass with no AI involved. If you would rather erase the background entirely, Remove Color turns it transparent instead.

Can I turn one specific color transparent?

Yes — that is exactly what the Remove Color tab does. Click the color on your image (or set the picker to it), and every matching pixel becomes fully transparent while the rest of the picture stays opaque. Adjust the tolerance if the shade you want gone appears in several slightly different versions.

Can I change the color of just one region?

Yes — use the Fill Color tab. The bucket recolors only the contiguous area you click, so two shapes that share the same color can be painted independently. The Replace tab works the opposite way: it changes every matching pixel across the whole image, wherever that shade appears.

Does the download stay a PNG?

Always. Whatever you upload — JPG, WebP, GIF or BMP — the download button saves a PNG at the original resolution, with transparency preserved. That is also why removing a background from a JPG works here: the exported file is a PNG and can store real see-through pixels.
